Last weekend, in between Christmas shopping we went for lunch in one of the most traditional and historic tea houses in Paris. It not only serves the best quality of teas in France and maybe Europe but it gives you a feeling of traveling back in time. Apart from the large selection of teas, it’s a great place for lunch with friends or family….and not to mentions the deserts…delicious. Because of its exquisite service and lively environment Marriage Frere is on of those places where you always want to come back. Luckily we live in Paris so we don’t spend a week without treating ourselves there. And not to forget the shop on the first floor, which offers more than 500 high quality teas over the counter, grown in more than 35 counties. In addtion to the teas you can find a variety of teapots and tea services to enjoy your favorite teas in the comfort of your home. Our personal favorites are the white and green matcha tea.
Tea has been introduced by a Buddhist monk in China centuries ago and later traveled to Japan and the rest of Asia long before being introduced in Europe. In Japan tea is considered more than just a beverage, it’s a whole ceremony which has survived many centuries.
The passion and involvement in trading teas of the Mariage family started back and the 17th century and it has been passed on to several generations when finally in 1854 the Mariage Frere company was established in Paris and since then it has become iconic for France. It’s definitely a place you need to visit when in Paris if you are a tea lover, or even if you are not but just want to experience the old french traditions.
